Meet the Main Characters of Red Sky

Welcome to the heart of Red Sky. Before the earth trembles, before the sky turns red, and before the science breaks down, it begins with three people—each brilliant, wounded, and pulled toward one another by forces far larger than themselves.

This post introduces the core triad of the novel:

  • Dr. David Mitchell, the institutional scientist

  • Manny Volynsky, the prophetic outcast

  • Cynthia Volynsky Walker, the woman caught between them—between love and doubt, reason and memory

Each character represents a worldview, a wound, and a hope. We invite you to get to know them—not just as actors in a story, but as complex souls navigating grief, faith, and cosmic reckoning.

Dr. David Mitchell – The Reluctant Truth-Bearer

David is a decorated solar physicist with a dazzling résumé—MIT PhD, director of the CASA lab at CU Boulder, and a public liaison for the National Solar Observatory. Groomed from birth by a family of elite scientists, David has always trusted the data. Until now.

  • Raised in Pasadena, surrounded by solar maps and mathematical expectations

  • Currently revered as the voice of reason in a world flirting with celestial hysteria

  • Internally torn between loyalty to scientific institutions and a gnawing sense that something is terribly wrong

He once expelled Manny Volynsky from a science conference. Now that same man confronts him with terrifying accuracy.

Manny Volynsky – The Prophetic Outcast

Once a respected scholar of comparative religion, Manny now lives as a spiritual recluse, dismissed by his peers and estranged from his daughter. He is convinced a celestial return—possibly the long-lost City of Enoch—is imminent, and the signs are written in red dust, poisoned rain, and ancient echoes.

  • Lives off-grid, guided by dreams, symbols, and sacred geometry

  • Speaks in poetic riddles and scriptural cadence, drawing both laughter and fear

  • Carries a briefcase filled with decades of warnings—his “Book of Witness”

Though he appears eccentric, even fragile, Manny is not lost. He is a compass—pointing to something others refuse to see.

Cynthia Volynsky Walker – The Seismologist Between Worlds

Cynthia is a rising star in geoscience—a USGS-trained expert in earthquake forecasting, coastal subsidence, and rupture modeling. She’s also Manny’s daughter, and Ethan’s widow. Caught between a father she doesn’t trust and a world she can’t predict, Cynthia walks a tightrope between intellectual mastery and emotional chaos.

  • Elegant, precise, guarded—she wears style like armor

  • Resents being known only as “Volynsky’s daughter,” but can’t escape the echo

  • Still grieving Ethan, her husband, who perished in a volcanic eruption—his body cremated by necessity, with Elena at his side

She doesn’t want to believe Manny. But part of her already does. And when the data starts to fail, Cynthia may be the only one strong enough to bridge the myth and the model.

Why These Three?

Together, David, Manny, and Cynthia form the emotional and ideological core of Red Sky.

  • David asks: Can science handle the unknown?

  • Manny asks: Can we remember what the ancients knew?

  • Cynthia asks: Can we stand between what we measure and what we feel—and not be torn apart?

We hope you’ll follow their journeys, grow attached to their flaws, and find pieces of yourself in each of them. With Carol’s help guiding character depth, emotion, and transformation, this post will be updated as new chapters emerge and arcs evolve.

Let us know who you relate to. Or who you can’t quite trust. That’s part of the fun.
